Great Beaches in New Jersey

Some define a "great" New Jersey beach as one with lots of wide, sandy areas for sunbathers. Others mention opportunities for swimming, fishing, beach sports, bird and whale watching, family amusements, entertainment festivals and boating. The beaches along the Jersey Shore have long been renowned for these attractions. Regardless of which great New Jersey beach you choose as your destination, you are certain to have a pleasant, memorable beach experience.
Wildwood Crest

Three adjoining Atlantic coastal towns in southern New Jersey, known collectively as the Wildwoods, feature some of the top-rated beaches along the Jersey Shore. The beach at Wildwood Crest, the southernmost of the three towns, was ranked No. 4 of New Jersey's top 10 beaches in 2009. The beach, popular with sunbathers, swimmers and birdwatchers, is quite wide with wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby activities and attractions include bike rentals, public tennis courts and Thunder Cat Dolphin Watch, which offers dolphin-spotting and sightseeing cruises. Metered, on-street parking is available. The beach is staffed by lifeguards during the summer season. Surf fishing, Frisbee playing and kite flying are not permitted. Restrooms are located on adjoining streets, and there are portable facilities on the beach. There are no showers or changing rooms available.
Beach Haven

Beach Haven, located on the narrow barrier island Long Beach Island, is a popular Jersey Shore destination. Its beaches, fronting the Atlantic Ocean and Little Egg Harbor, were ranked No. 9 of New Jersey's top 10 beaches in 2008. Surfing, fishing and kayaking are allowed in designated areas of the beach; game playing is permitted at the lifeguard's discretion. Beach Haven is home to Fantasy Island amusement park and the Museum of New Jersey Maritime History; during the summer season, the borough hosts regular entertainment venues and the annual Chowderfest. Free, on-street parking is available. The beach is staffed by lifeguards during the summer season. There are no on-beach facilities, but restrooms and one outdoor shower are located in several areas just off the beach. There are no changing rooms.
Point Pleasant Beach

Point Pleasant Beach---not to be confused with the adjoining, similarly named borough of Point Pleasant---has been a popular shore destination since the 19th century. This beach was ranked No. 8 of New Jersey's top 10 beaches in 2008, and its boardwalk and amusement rides have long been a draw for day-trippers. In addition to traditional beach activities of swimming and sunbathing, boating, fishing, crabbing and clamming are popular here. The annual Festival of the Sea street fair has attracted visitors for more than 30 years. On-street parking, both free and metered, is available. The beach is staffed by lifeguards during the summer season. There are no on-beach facilities, but portable restrooms are available near the beach; restrooms are also available at commercial establishments. There are no showers or changing rooms.
